Gingivitis is the precursor to periodontal disease, a type of gum condition. The majority of people are more familiar with the term gingivitis, but the biggest distinction between the two is the severity of the disease in the tissues and structures that support teeth. Due to a buildup of plaque and calculus, only the gums at the gum line become inflamed with gingivitis (tartar). If left untreated, that plaque will harden to form more calculus, providing the ideal environment for bacteria that cause inflammation to flourish and spread. In an effort to be free of the inflammatory bacteria at this point, the gums begin to pull away from the neck or base of the teeth. Unfortunately, this action results in pockets developing in the gums, giving bacteria a bigger, better place to live. When this occurs, the mouth has periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease. Unless something is done, the bacteria will keep getting into the spaces around the teeth and eating away at the soft tissue and bone. Loss of teeth is the outcome.
