Periodontal disease, a form of gum disease, develops from gingivitis. Although gingivitis is more commonly used, the main difference between the two is how severe the disease is in the tissues and structures that support teeth. Gingivitis only affects the gums at the gum line because of a buildup of plaque and calculus (tartar). That plaque will harden to create more calculus if left untreated, creating the perfect environment for bacteria that cause inflammation to multiply and spread. The gums now start to pull away from the neck or base of the teeth in an effort to be free of the inflammatory bacteria. This action, regrettably, causes pockets to form in the gums, giving bacteria a larger, better place to live. Periodontitis, or periodontal disease, is present when this happens. If nothing is done, the bacteria will continue to enter the spaces around the teeth and destroy the bone and soft tissue. The result is tooth loss.
