Dental restorations are often used to resolve esthetic problems, even when carious lesions are not present. The masking ability of restorative materials depends on their optical constants, as previously described, and on their thickness. Dental restoration techniques rely heavily on precious metals in general, and in particular on gold, for the filling of cavities and the construction of orthodontic appliances, crowns, bridges, and partials.
